Assess General Knowledge with GIE

What is the General Information Evaluation (GIE)?

The General Information Evaluation (GIE) is an assessment focused on measuring general knowledge across various topics. Developed to assess factual understanding and recall, the GIE encourages precise evaluation of an individual’s informational awareness and general knowledge skills. Currently, the GIE is in a testing phase, following a pilot of its short form with 2,048 participants, and is evolving into a full computerized adaptive test (CAT) utilizing Item Response Theory (IRT) for dynamic item selection.

Psychometric Properties of the GIE Short Form

Pilot testing of the GIE’s 30-item short form indicated strong psychometric reliability and validity:

Reliability

  • Internal Consistency: The short form showed a Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.91, indicating high reliability across items (N = 2,048).

Validity

  • Criterion Validity: The short form showed a significant correlation of 0.81 with the JCCES General Knowledge subtest (N = 58; p < 0.05), supporting its effectiveness in measuring general knowledge.

Future Development of the GIE

The GIE is advancing towards a full CAT format, which will select questions based on response patterns in real time. Further testing will ensure reliable and valid results, creating an efficient tool for assessing general knowledge across diverse examinees.
